Choosing the Right Welding Rod for the Job
Picking the right welding rod isn’t just about price — it’s about getting the right finish, strength, and reliability for the job at hand. With so many options on the shelf, it’s worth knowing what you’re buying and why. Know Your Material Different rods suit different metals. Mild steel? Go for a general-purpose rod like an E6013. Stainless steel? You’ll need a stainless rod to match. Cast iron? That’s a specialist rod altogether. If you’re not sure, always check the material first. Think About Position Some rods are easier to work with overhead or vertically. Others are better for flat work. E7018 rods, for example, give a smooth finish but need dry storage and careful handling. Mind the Amps Every rod has a recommended amperage range. Using too many amps burns the rod too fast. Too few, and you’ll struggle to keep a steady arc. Make sure your machine matches the rod you’re using. Ask Us for Advice We’ve been supplying welding consumables for over 30 years.
